Watertown Rapids Win CTWSL League Tournament

Behind the shutout pitching of Kim Bogan, the Watertown Rapids defeated the “Cinderella” West Hartford Wildcats 6-0 in the finals of the 2018 CTWSL tournament to capture the Gold title.  The Rapids entered as the #2 seed and faced a tough #5 Canton team.  Bogan tossed her first shutout of the day with a 2-0 victory over Canton in a pitcher’s duel with veteran Danielle Leone.  Meanwhile, #6 seed West Hartford took on #1 seed Rocky Hill with West Hartford’s Julia Murphy hurling a 2-0 shutout victory of her own.  While the Rapids advanced to the Gold Bracket final and awaited their eventual opponent, West Hartford had to take on the defending league and tournament champions, the Mirage Women.  With Murphy pitching another gem, the Wildcats supported her with some outstanding defense and bested the Mirage 1-0 in 8 innings to move into the finals.  The Mirage Women had defeated the CT Tides 6-0 to advance into the Gold Bracket play-down.  With Murphy not starting the final game, it gave the Rapids the opening they needed to build a lead that Bogan never relinquished.

In the Silver Bracket, Rocky Hill was the top seed after their upset loss to West Hartford.  The CT Tides defeated Canton to move into the Silver bracket final against Rocky Hill, where they upset the top seed by a score of 7-1 to win the Silver Bracket.  While the tournament was played under beautiful sunny skies at Veteran’s Park in Watertown, torrential rains and thunderstorms that dropped over 2 inches of rain in Watertown on Saturday night had put the tournament in jeopardy.  Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the Watertown grounds crew, fields were brought back to playable conditions in time for the scheduled 10:00 am start on Sunday morning.

Despite a 2018 season that was challenging with weather issues on several Sundays, as well as dealing with holiday weekends that left some teams shorthanded, the season-ending tournament was a successful conclusion.  We thank our players, coaches, umpires and fans for their participation and support of the CT Women’s Softball League!
